Structure of a PAN

- The first five characters are letters (in upper case), Followed by four numerals and last character is alphabet.
- The first, second and third characters forms a sequence of same alphabet from AAA to ZZZ.

5. The fifth character of the PAN is first letter of either of the following:
The
surname of the individual.
Of
the name of entity, trust,or organization.
6. The
last digit is the alphabet that is the check sum to verify the validity of the

How to Apply for PAN Card online

Step 1
Open the NSDL website to
apply for a new PAN Card.
Step 2
Select the Application type- New PAN for
citizens or change existing PAN data.
Step 3:
Select your category-
individual, organization etc.
Step 4:
Fill in all the required
details like name, date of birth, e-mail address and your mobile number.
Step 5:
On submitting the form, you
will get a message about the next step to be followed.

Click on “continue with the
PAN application form” button.
Step 7:
Now you will be redirected
to new page where you have to submit digital e-KYC.
Step 8:
Now select whether you want
physical PAN card or not. Provide the last four digit of your Aadhaar number.
Step 9:
Enter your personal information,
contact and other required details.
Now you will be directed to
the last part of the form that is submission of documents and declaration.
Step 10:
Enter the first eight digits
of your PAN Card to submit the application. Click proceed is no modification
is required.
Now fill the aadhaar details
and proceed to continue.
Step 11:
You will be re-directed to
the payment window. You have to make payment. Then a payment slip will be
generated then click on continue.
Step 12:
Now for adhaar
authentication check the declaration the click on “Authenticate”.
Now click on e-KYC and then
an OTP will be sent to registered mobile number.

Enter the OTP carefully and
submit the form.
Step 14:
Now click on continue with
e-sign and submit the application to get the Acknowledgement slip IN PDF format
and its password as your date of birth (ddmmyyyy).
Apply for PAN card offline
If you don’t want to apply
for PAN online then you can also go with offline method.
Here are the steps you can
follow:
- Download and print form 49A.
- Fill the form and affix your two passport size photos on it.
- Pay the fee through demand draft.
- Also attach self attested copies of proofs with the form.
- Mention- “APPLICATION FOR PAN-N-Acknowledgement number” superscripted on the Envelope.
- On Successful processing of
the application, the PAN will be generated and sent to your address.

Fee charged for PAN application
The fee charged for a PAN Card that needs to be dispatched to an Indian address is Rs. 112/-. Fee payment can be made through demand draft, Debit card or Credit card.
